Steeped in Word Poetry Series

Poetry is one of the five elements necessary for a comprehensive Chinese garden. Usually, the poetry is presented in the form of calligraphic inscriptions. Every Saturday in October at 3 PM, hear poetry come alive during readings and Q&A sessions with five prolific Pacific Northwest poets.

About the Poets
 
Judith Barrington has published four poetry collections, most recently The Conversation and Horses and the Human Soul, and two chapbooks: Postcard from the Bottom of the Sea and Lost Lands (winner of the Robin Becker Chapbook Award). She was the winner of the Gregory O’Donoghue International Poetry Prize for 2013. Her poems have appeared in numerous journals including Prairie Schooner, Americas Review, Kenyon Review and Poetry London. She teaches workshops in the USA, Britain, and Spain, and has been a faculty member of the MFA Program at the University of Alaska, Anchorage.
 
Dawn Diez Willis holds an MFA from the University of Oregon. Her work has appeared in Iowa Review, Poet Lore, Southern Poetry Review, and elsewhere, and a collaborative visual art & poetry book with artist Ann Kresge, Sacred Spaces, is forthcoming at the end of 2016. Still Life with Judas & Lightning, Diez Willis’s first book, was a 2015 finalist for the Oregon Book Award and is available through Airlie Press.
 
Shin Yu Pai is the author of eight books of poetry. Her work has appeared in publications throughout the U.S., Japan, China, Taiwan, The United Kingdom, and Canada. She has been a featured presenter at national and international literary festivals including the Geraldine Dodge Poetry Festival and the Montreal Zen Poetry Festival. In 2010, she became a member of the Macondo Workshop for Writers. Her essays and nonfiction writing have appeared in Tricycle, YES! Magazine, The Rumpus, The Stranger, Medium, Thought Catalog, International Examiner, and ParentMap. Shin Yu received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MA in Museology from the University of Washington. She is the head of the Seattle Obscura Society.
 
Marilyn Stablein is an award-winning poet, essayist, fiction writer and artist. Her books include Splitting Hard Ground: Poems; Sleeping in Caves: A Himalayan Memoir and a collection of eco-essays, Climate of Extremes: Landscapes and Imagination. Recent work appears in Make It True: A Cascadia Poetry Anthology. She lives in Portland where she teaches poetry, memoir and an introduction to Artist Books.
 
Vince Wixon’s current manuscript is Cold Spell, and his published collections of poems are Blue Moon: Poems from Chinese Lines, The Square Grove, and Seed. His poem “Tornado Weather” appears in Garrison Keillor’s anthology, Good Poems, American Places. He has co-produced films on William Stafford and Lawson Inada. With Paul Merchant, former Director of the William Stafford Archive, he has edited four books by Stafford, including Sound of the Ax: Aphorisms and Poems, published in the Pitt Poetry Series in 2014. Vince Wixon and his wife Patty live in Ashland.
 
Patty Wixon is the author of three books of poems: Airing the Sheets, Side Effects, and Dear Spoon. Her poems have appeared in numerous literary journals including Hubbub, The Cresset, Windfall, and Cascadia Review, and six anthologies, most recently A Ritual to Read Together: Poems in Conversation with William Stafford. Since her retirement as a teacher and school administrator, she has helped bring well-known writers from across the country to Southern Oregon to give public readings and workshops to students and teachers. She and her husband, Vince Wixon, were longtime poetry editors for Jefferson Monthly. They received Oregon’s 2014 Stewart H. Holbrook Literary Legacy Award.
