Pedagogy, the study of what humans do and make to transmit culture, is basic to how we understand any domain of knowledge. Learning to conduct life’s intentions in Chinese as a foreign language is a time consuming, mind altering, and life changing experience. Being better aware of and working toward a design of this experience is what consumes those of us in Chinese Language Pedagogy.
Expressing this awareness requires a number of assumptions: a 21st Century concept of communication between the USA and the Chinese-speaking world, the range of the roles individuals play in that communication, the nature of language and culture socialization, and the relationship between learning and instruction. Professors Walker and Jian will present and discuss these fundamental assumptions.
Bios:
Galal L. Walker is Professor of Chinese in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures (DEALL) and Director of the National East Asian Languages Resource Center (NEALRC) at The Ohio State University. In addition to well-recognized contributions to Chinese language studies in the U.S., numerous accolades, and leadership roles, he is advisor to the Chinese School Association (U.S.), President of MidWest US-China Association, member of the Board of Visitors, Defense Foreign Language Institute, and Honorary Professor at Beijing Normal, Guizhou Normal, Wuhan, and Sichuan Universities.
Xiaobin Jian is Associate Professor of Chinese, DEALL, and Associate Director of NEALRC, The Ohio State University. He specializes in Chinese language and culture pedagogy focused on producing non-native, cross-cultural experts. He has authored and co-authored several books and articles and is currently developing pedagogical materials for intermediate-advanced language learners that can be used in a range of cultural, social, economic and political contexts.
