China, Japan and Korea: Literature for the 3-12 Classroom

An NCTA workshop with Mary Barber Roberts, held at the University of Washington in Seattle
 
"China, Japan and Korea: Literature for the 3-12 Classroom" will examine East Asia through the prism of children’s and young adult literature, both fiction and non-fiction. Using a cross section of literary genres within a range of historical periods and cultural contexts, teachers will:

  • preview and survey a collection of materials suitable for classroom use with grades 3-12
  • engage in teaching strategies for selection and analysis
  • practice close reading and textual support in books about China, Japan and Korea
  • use literature to deepen understanding of East Asian history
  • inquire into the nature of power and authority depicted within a range of texts about East Asia and Asian Americans

Picture books, graphic novels, mangas, non-fiction, and historical fiction appropriate for students will be given specific attention. Suggested lesson activities will be provided.

  • Saturday, April 23, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 14, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
