Professor Tan has taught courses at the undergraduate and graduate level at USC since 2003. His research areas include auction theory, microeconomic theory, industrial organization, antitrust/competition policy, and the Chinese economy, and his current projects involve collusion in auction markets, competition in international telephone markets, and compatibility and standardization. As a consultant, Professor Tan has provided advice to a number of public and private sector clients, such as the Delta Economics Group and World Bank, with respect to competition and regulatory matters in grocery retailing and IT industries. He has been a visiting professor at the Centre for Asian Pacific Studies and the Centre for Public Policy Studies at Lingnan University, Hong Kong and the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business in Beijing. Additionally, he has been an associate professor of economics at the University of British Columbia and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Professor Tan is currently the associate editor of International Journal of Industrial Organization, referees for numerous journals, and is a member of many organizations and committees.
