Dr. Sarter received her doctoral degree in nursing from New York State University in 1984. Before becoming certified as a family nurse practitioner in 1990, she had extensive experience in oncology nursing, as well as intensive care and psychiatric nursing. She is nationally known as a scholar of Rogerian nursing science and as a philosopher of nursing. Her focus is on holistic views of person, health and illness and she has conducted research on spiritual concerns of cancer patients. The author of two books and many articles on nursing philosophy, she is currently working on a third book on the philosophical foundations of nursing. Barbara has been on the faculty of nursing at USC since 1984, and was awarded tenure in 1991. She served for five years as Director of the Graduate Program. Her private practice as a family nurse practitioner is in rural East San Diego County, and she has also been on staff as a primary care provider at the Mountain Health Center, a rural community health center in Campo. In addition to mainstream medical and nursing management, she incorporates alternative therapies into her practice, including herbal and nutritional substances.
