Research Study Abroad scholarships (RSA) $6,000 award
Undergraduates actively engaged in East Asian Studies may apply for a RSA (Research Study Abroad) scholarship, to participate in an approved USC study abroad program for one semester in any East Asian country (China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan). While abroad, scholars conduct research under the guidance of a USC East Asian studies faculty member, in addition to completing East Asian language and area coursework offered at the host institution. The research project, when concluded, must be equivalent in value to four units of independent study.
Scholarship benefits/eligibility:
$3,000 applied to the student account during the semester abroad and $3,000 applied to the student account upon successful completion of the research component. Students from any department or school may apply, but must have a concentration in East Asian studies (major, minor or completion of multiple East Asian studies courses as part of their program of study). It is expected that RSA scholarship recipients will have completed at least three semesters of East Asian language study or equivalent thereof prior to departure.

Area Studies Abroad scholarships (ASA)
$3,000 award
ASA (Area Studies Abroad) scholarships are awarded to undergraduate students in professional schools to study abroad for one semester, as an incentive to pursue a minor or a concentration in East Asian studies. Scholarship recipients may participate in any USC-approved study abroad program in East Asia, including programs offered through a professional school. However, the award must be used for a minimum of two East Asian language and area coursework.
Upon returning from abroad, all East Asia ASA scholarship recipients must submit a one-page typed essay describing how the program allowed them to interact with the host culture, how the program enhanced their language skills and/or understanding of cultural, social, political, and economic issues, and how the program activities related to their future academic and/or career goals. Students are encouraged to be creative in their presentation of this report. Please note that this mandatory essay and all other materials submitted for this report become the property of EASC and may be used in print and/or electronic publications.
Scholarship benefits/eligibility:
$3,000 applied to the student account upon formal notice of registration and enrollment in two East Asian studies courses during the semester abroad.
Undergraduates from any professional school may apply. Professional majors receiving these scholarships are encouraged, but not obligated, to formally declare a minor in East Asian studies. No prior East Asian language study is necessary for eligibility in this program; however, language requirements of individual host institutions abroad vary and ASA scholars will be subject to the pre-requisites of the particular study abroad program selected.
