J.S. Lee Memorial Fellowship Programme for Chinese Arts (Deadline: March 20, 2009)

The J. S. Lee Memorial Fellowship Programme was established in 2008 in memory of Dr. J. S. Lee’s lifelong promotion of the study of Chinese art. Dr. J. S. Lee was the founder of Bei Shan Tang Foundation and a distinguished philanthropist in Hong Kong who valued the importance of the arts to a society and the need to nurture cultural development. He was a major benefactor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and supported the building of its Institute of Chinese Studies and the Art Museum. He also supported numerous museums and art institutions in China and abroad, including the Hong Kong Museum of Art, the Shanghai Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, the Oriental Ceramic Society and Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art in London.

In order to perpetuate Dr. Lee’s aspiration of promoting Chinese Art, the Fellowship Programme’s mission is:

  • To facilitate the exchange of curatorial expertise on a worldwide basis;
  • To contribute to the professional enhancement of curators and academics in Chinese art through attachment and fellowship at museums and arts institutions in China and overseas

Eligibility

Applicants must hold at least a bachelor degree in a relevant discipline such as Chinese art history, archaeology, museology and conservation. Proficiency in language of the destined country is required. There is no restriction regarding the nationalities of applicants.

Application Deadline

The deadline for receiving applications is Friday March 20, 2009. The announcements of awards will be made by July 2009.

Application Procedure

Application forms can be downloaded from our homepage at Download Area.

Before submitting the application, applicants should find and contact a suitable museum or art institution for arranging the attachment. Applicants can view the updated list of participating institutions at the website. A letter of notification of the proposed attachment by the applicant from the participating institution must be included in the application. Applicants can apply for attachments ranging from four to twelve months. If applicants cannot find a suitable museum/art institution; he/she may contact the project co-ordinator of the J. S. Lee Memorial Fellowship Programme via email for assistance.

Two recommendation letters are required. Recommendation forms can be downloaded at the website. Referees should submit the recommendation directly to the J. S. Lee Memorial Fellowship Programme by post.

Please note that all applications should be submitted in English or Chinese and applications by fax or e-mail will NOT be considered. Hard copies of completed application forms and other required documents should be submitted (by post) to:

Confirmation e-mail will be sent to acknowledge receipt of the application. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed at their home country shortly after the deadline.

Regulation in Application

The Fellowship Programme should be carried out between September 2009 to August 2010. Fellows are expected to begin their attachments in the fourth quarter of 2009. Any changes in an awardees’ plan of fellowship differing from the application must have prior written approval of the Programme Committee. Within three months of concluding the work undertaken under the tenure of the fellowship, the recipient must submit a written report on the work accomplished.
